Pastor's Weekly Message: Some people might be surprised to learn that the first pope was a married man. But Peter most assuredly had a mother-in-law, about whom he was very worried in today’s Gospel. She is mentioned only this one time in all the Gospels, but that one mention is important to us.

She lay ill with a fever. When Simon told Jesus about her, he grasped her hands and helped her up and the fever left her. Without even a few minutes to rest from her ordeal, she immediately began to wait on Jesus and his friends.

Mark’s purpose in telling this story was not that the men folk couldn’t fix their own lunch, or that a woman’s place is in the home. He was telling us that when Jesus Christ touches you, discipleship follows, and it is expressed in service. Discipleship is not about freedom or power or authority.

Discipleship is about lowly, selfless service in the name of God.  Read More

We are very proud of the 51 young men and women of St. Barnabas Parish who, this past Friday evening, received the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Anointed and commissioned by Bishop Frank Kane, they will now take their place as fully initiated members of the Body of Christ, and sharers in his mission to build the Kingdom. Congratulation to their proud parents, sponsors, family, and teachers who helped prepare them for this moment.

All of us at St. Barnabas will benefit from the spirit and enthusiasm these newly-confirmed Christians will bring to our parish family.

St. Barnabas Celebrates Catholic Schools Week
The St. Barnabas parish kicked off its celebration of Catholic School Week with a Family Mass followed by an Open House at St. Barnabas School on Sunday January 29th. Throughout the week, a number of special activities took place to celebrate and build our Catholic school community. There is much to be proud of with a growing enrollment, strong academics, and several new improvements to the school day.

More than 59 new perspective families attended the Open House that included a personal tour of the school. Families also had an opportunity to meet teachers and school staff in order to learn more about St. Barnabas School’s approach to nurturing each child spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially. Electronic Giving on the Rise
It is no secret that technology has impacted every aspect of our lives. From the internet, to smart phones and social media, the world operates much differently than even a few short years ago. Even the way we pay our bills has changed with high percentages of consumers now paying bills electronically. This shift is changing the way parishes, including St. Barnabas are handling their Sunday offertory.

Research shows that less than 4% of those fewer than 30 years of age write checks and less than 12% of those under the age of 50 write checks. Of the population over 65, more than 40% prefer to pay electronically. Consumers are attracted to electronic payments because of its convenience, ease of use, and improved security. Most experts agree, this trend is likely to continue. Read More

Men's CRHP Scheduled February 18th - 19th
It has been a little more than a year since St. Barnabas Parish re-launched the Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) retreat and renewal process. Since then more than nearly 100 parishioners have taken part in the experience. Those who have say it has shaped their lives in ways never expected.

“St. Barnabas is a big parish with a lot of action going on. It is easy to get lost or just never get active,” said Nick Judge. “The renewal weekend gave me an opportunity to relearn how important Christ is in my life, and how He shows up in my life just exactly when I am not expecting Him.” Read More

Ephiphany Concert, Gratitude Reception Well Attended
Over 250 parishioners enjoyed a special Epiphany Concert followed by a Wine and Cheese Reception in the church vestibule on Saturday, January 7th. The event, sponsored by the Stewardship & Development Committee, was designed to thank and recognize parishioners for their financial support throughout the year.

“The idea came out of an exercise where we brainstormed creative ways to thank people for their gifts,”said David Hibbs, Chair of the Stewardship & Development Committee. “It occurred to us that the choir expansion was a wonderful thing to build a celebration around. Without the kind of support that we have a St. Barnabas, projects like the choir area would just not be possible.” Read More

"Be There for Billy" Benefit
On July 3rd 2011, the lives of St. Rita H.S. senior Billy Rehfeld and his family changed forever. Billy was critically injured as a passenger in a terrible car accident. Billy's injuries were not only life-threatening but life changing as well, as he sustained multiple broken bones (pelvis, left femur, right tibia, and right hand) as well as amputation of the left leg below the knee. In an effort to defray staggering medical costs and ensure appropriate medical care and equipment, friends and family of Billy and the Rehfeld Family are hosting the BE THERE FOR BILLY Benefit on March 24 at Bourbon Street.
