St. Barnabas Awards & Recognition

Chicago Asthma Consortium

On April 15, 2011, St. Barnabas School was awarded the 2011 Asthma Friendly School Silver Award by the Chicago Asthma Consortium for creating an Asthma Friendly School for our students.

Quiz Bowl

Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a computer based national contest for elementary school students in grades 5-8. Students compete against hundreds of other schools around the country, in the subjects of math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, and general trivia. Points are awarded based on how fast they answer as well as on accuracy.

In November, 2010, the 5th and 6th grade students participated in the Statewide Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl.  In May of 2010, by a peer vote, a select group of 5thy and 6th grade students participated in the National contest.

St. Ignatius Jr. High Scholastic Bowl Competition

In October of 2010, thye 7th and 8th grade students participated in the St. Ignatius Scholastic Bowl Competition and finished in the top 20% out of 40 schools that patricipated.

High School Scholarships:

High school scholarships were awarded based upon outstanding test scores on the high school entrance exam. Each year many of the St. Barnabas 8th grade students are awarded Scholarships from the following schools: Brother Rice, St. Ignatius, Mt. Carmel, Mother McAuley, Marist and St. Rita.

Midwest Academic Talent Search:

Midwest Academic Talent Search (MATS) is a program of the Center for Talent Development (CTD) that offers above-grade-level testing for academically talented students in grades 3-9.

In 2011, fourteen St. Barnabas students were presented certificates for selection and participation in the Midwest Talent Search sponsored by Northwestern University.

Future City Competition

Future City National Competition, sponsored by National Engineers Week, is a program introducing 7th & 8th grade students to engineering with the popular Sim City software. Students design future cities with simulation software, build scale models, write essays and give oral presentations on their city's design.
